3 types of warehouse jobs you can do in the Logistics field
Thinking of venturing into the Logistics field? You might end up working in a warehouse. If you are considering working in one, you should be aware that some warehouses are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so shift work is not uncommon. You’ll likely have to work some weekends and evenings.
To give you some insight, we’re exploring 3 types of warehouse jobs that you can do in the Logistics field:
1. Stock Controller: This person monitors and manages goods and stock in a warehouse so that new stock can be ordered as required and the right numbers and quantities made available all the time. To become a stock controller you need basic accounting skills and you should be computer literate. You can work your way up in the warehouse structure, but studying a short course at a college will be advantageous if this is your employment goal.
2. Stores Clerk: This person’s primary purpose is to maintain proper inventory levels and stock records. In a warehouse environment, you might have to move goods around and most of this is done with a forklift, so getting your forklift license might be a good idea if you want to do this job. You don’t need to have a degree, but some form of stores certification could score you some points.
3. Warehouse Manager: This individual oversees the safe receipt, storage, retrieval and timely dispatch of goods. It’s their job to ensure that the workplace health and safety requirements are met. They are also responsible for warehouse security and they plan the arrangement of goods and special requirements for products (like fridges needed for chilled goods or newspaper / special packaging material for fragile products).
It’s a warehouse manager’s job to ensure that productivity targets are met and to maintain computerized admin, automated storage and retrieval systems. Warehouse managers manage teams of workers and deal with personnel issues. It’s also their job to recruit, train and discipline staff. Some managers also oversee picking, packing and distribution activity. You can’t become one fresh out of matric.
To become a warehouse manager you’ll definitely need to have warehouse experience, so you’ll have to work as a stores clerk or stock controller and work your way up the ladder.
Well, there you go, 3 types of warehouse jobs you can do in the Logistics field. We trust that you find this information useful.
