Job Well Done: UCT Rugby Team
Last night rugby teams from UCT (the University of Cape Town) and NWU Pukke (North West University) met in the Varsity Cup final. The match was played at the Fanie Botha sports ground in Potchefstroom. Even though UCT scored the first try, NWU Pukke dominated most of the first half of the match thanks to tries by Luther Obi and Rhyk Welgemoed. Richard Stewart scored the second try for the Ikeys, but it didn’t give them the lead, thanks to a failed conversion. It did keep them within striking distance though.
NWU Pukke lead the match by 13 points to 10 at half time, but this could have been a different story. NWU Pukke thought they had scored just before half-time, but the TMO ruled that centre Johan Deysel had committed a reckless tackle, so he received a yellow card and the try was disallowed. Armand van der Merwe scored the first try for NWU Pukke in the second half, giving them a healthy 8 point lead, but but they were reduced to 14 men again soon afterwards when tighthead prop Nhlanhla Ngcamu received a yellow card for a high tackle. They increased their lead with 10 points, but UCT bounced back with a try by Jason Klaasen. UCT were then cut down to 14 men after a cynical infringement from Lihleli Xoli on their tryline and NWU Pukke’s Van der Merwe thought he had gone over for a second try straight after this, but the TMO ruled this a double movement.
Francois Robbertse added another try and it looked as NWU-Pukke was going to win the match, but UCT refused to say die and they were rewarded in a very dramatic style. The Ikeys were 18 points behind, but tries from Michael Botha, Dean Grant and Nathan Nel saw them stage one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the Varsity Cup. They won the match by 39 points to 33 and claimed their second title in the tournament’s seven year history.
