10 Power Words you should use on your CV

Remember that when you’re job hunting you are selling yourself to your potential employer. It’s a good thing to have a professional photo on your Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn profile or one attached to physical copy of your CV. This should be important, but should not be your main focus when it comes to your CV.

You might have heard the saying “the pen is mightier than the sword”. Well, this also rings true for CV’s. There are many power words that you could use in your CV that could improve your chances of finding the job you’ve been looking for. To help you sell yourself to your potential employer, I’m featuring 10 power words that you should use in your CV. Take note that the majority of these words will be used in the Work History segment of your CV.

1. “Conceptualized” – Use this word when you have formed a concept or idea of something whilst working at your previous or current employer. For example: “Conceptualized new payment control system for the sales department”.

2. “Introduced” – Use this word if you brought a product, measure or concept into use / operation for the first time.  For example: “Introduced new security measures for the company’s website”.

3. “Set Goals” – Use this phrase to show your potential employer that you’re a goal-driven individual . For example “Set goals for the financial year for sales department”.

4. “Oversaw” – If you were a supervisor / manager / team leader at your previous company this is the perfect phrase to use on your CV. For example: “Oversaw implementation of new computerized ordering system for restaurant”.

5. “Initiated” – Using this word will show your potential employer that you take initiative. For example: “Initiated contact with potential bloggers / industry players for potential media partnership”.

6. “Increased” – The chances that this word will be used in a negative light are low (unless you’re referring to inflation, taxes or prices), so make sure that you use it. For example: “Launched new advertising products that lead to increased turnover for the financial year”.

7. “Strengthened”  – Use this word to show your potential employer that you’re capable of forming relationship with potential clients for their business. For example: “Strengthened the bond with company affiliates to assure financial stability by brokering new profit sharing margins”.

8. “Trained” – If you’ve trained any staff for a particular task at your previous / current employer you should include this on your CV. This shows your potential employer that you’ve capable of sharing knowledge if you need to. For example: “Trained four new waiters at restaurant” or “Trained interns to balance the company books” or “Trained junior accountants to use Pastel more efficiently”.

9. “Promoted” – If you have been promoted by your previous / current employer make sure that you state this on your CV. This shows that your potential employer that you’re loyal to the company that employs you. For example: “Promoted to Call Center Group Leader in 2011” or “Promoted to Call Center Manager”, etc.

10. “Adapted” – If you’re someone that has made something suitable for a new use or purpose, make sure that you state that properly on your CV. For example “Adapted company website to support a WordPress blog” or “Adapted old sales structure to include field sales and online sales”.

    • Henno Kruger says:

Hi Tererai – You should ideally be following up with recruiters once you have applied. Some recruiters receive up to 700 applications for a single position, so they might not notice your application immediately. You have to be pro-active. Hope you find employment soon!
