Top 10 tips to keep in mind when applying for jobs
For tips on how to apply for a job, we’ve compiled a list of 10 crucial DO’s and DON’TS when sending in that application for employment through Job Mail, to help get you started:
- DO make sure that you are logged in before applying for a job on Job Mail. This will make the application process much easier and more streamlined.
- DO ensure that you have your default cover letter completed on your profile. This can be done by logging into your Jobseeker Profile on Job Mail.
- DON’T send your application without a cover letter. This can be deemed as lazy, unprofessional and can create the impression that you didn’t put much effort into applying for the job.
- DO make your cover letter stand out from the rest. Be creative, original, but to the point. When you register and apply for jobs online, avoid being too general and tailor your cover letter to suit the specific job you are applying for. You should aim to ‘sell’ yourself as the best possible candidate for the job. Tip: Look at the job spec of the job and highlight your matching skills and experience in your cover letter.
- DO stipulate which position you are applying for in your cover letter subject line when applying for a job.
- DON’T apply for jobs you do not qualify or are suitable for. Employers do not like getting bombarded with irrelevant applications and it could give you a bad reputation with recruiters or potential employers.
- DON’T send in your job applications unless you have fully completed your Job Mail profile and uploaded your CV. The more complete your profile and CV are the better your chances of getting a good response and landing a job. To update your CV, log in to your profile, go through each section and ensure that all your details have been completed.
- DON’T upload an unprofessional profile picture to your profile. Your profile picture should be a professional looking head and shoulders shot of you. Read “Your profile picture tells a thousand words” for some great tips on what your professional image should portray.
- DON’T copy and paste your entire CV in the cover letter or career goals fields. Use those sections to complement your CV only.
- DON’T apply if you have only registered an account on Job Mail. This will be a very basic CV and, if you are applying for a job, it won’t get you very far. You should log in to complete your profile as close to 100% as possible, including your profile picture, work history, qualifications and skills, and upload your CV in Word or PDF format to your profile.
