International Tourist Guide Day

South Africa’s beautiful landscape and fascinating wildlife attracts tourists from across the globe. The amount of visitors in the country has created a vast range of tourism jobs. International Tourist Guide Day was first held during 1990 in 15 countries. Over the years the event has grown to involve an impressive number of destinations. Children can also learn more about the attractions in the area by participating in a tour. Officials as well as the general public are invited to participate in this event. The World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations organises the Tourist Guide Day. The theme for this year’s event is “New Approaches to interpreting cultural and national heritage.”

Venues for this event in South Africa include the Cradle of Humankind in Maropeng. The event at this venue runs over two days and includes a workshop, gala dinner, presentations and excursions. Topics that will be discussed include the preservation of important sites, relaying sensitive information to tourists as well as nation building.

Tourist guides will benefit from attending the events as presentations and discussions provide excellent educational opportunities. Retraining courses are also offered at some venues. The public will get the chance to know their local tourist guides during this event. Tourist Guides are important as they represent our country to international travellers. In selected areas, museums have offered free entrance and complementary entrance has been granted for local attractions.
