Legal Requirements for Driver Jobs
Drivers are required to drive a vehicle from one location to another and there are many different companies that hire staff to fill this position. The type of vehicle used and the job responsibilities are industry specific and drivers should make sure that they have the relevant qualification/licence for their position. Driver jobs require the employee to stick to schedules and follow traffic laws.
Legal Requirements for Driver Jobs in South Africa:
Employees can be expected to drive light or heavy motor vehicles carrying goods to different locations. Driver jobs in South Africa may entail operating passenger vehicles such as school buses, taxis or limousines. Passenger vehicles transport people for remuneration and this classification also pertains to vehicles carrying twelve or more passengers. Positions are available for driving breakdown vehicles or tank trucks. Drivers are hired to transport dangerous goods and this requires operating large vehicles such as fuel tanks.
South African law stipulates that people transporting goods in a truck weighing more than 3 500kgs need to have a professional driving permit. Drivers of passenger vehicles, breakdown vehicles and those transporting hazardous materials are also required to have a permit. Drivers of goods vehicles must be over 18 years old while those operating passenger vehicles are required by law to be over 21 years old. Dangerous goods may only be transported by persons over the age of twenty five.
To apply for a professional driver’s permit the candidate must have a valid driving licence for the vehicle that they are operating and a medical certificate. Drivers may not have a criminal record for offences pertaining to drunken driving or violence. Applicants for a licence to transport hazardous materials must receive training from a certified institute. The courses help keep staff safe and help to avoid accidents. Topics include transporting infectious material as well as explosives.

In 2008 I came from a party and got caught for drink and drive and went to court and did community service now Ive got a record all these things happened due to a lack of knowledge. I tried to clear my name by paying a small amount of money for fingerprints at the police station still I dont have proof that I have clearance from Pretoria please explain how this works. Will I ever get employed due to this anytime soon or am I hopeless due to this silly mistake?

Hi Boyce – Ideally you should be following up with recruiters once you have applied. Some of them receive up to 700 applications for a single position. If you don’t get feedback from them within 14 days, assume that you did not get the job and move on to the next position. Also make sure that your CV is updated. Hope you find employment soon.
