Job Well Done Award: Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova

For the past month or so the oldest tennis tournament in the world, the Wimbledon Championship was held in London in the UK. The tournament was first held in 1877 and has been the only Grand Slam tennis tournament to be held on grass since 1988.

This year’s tournament was a very exciting one. The defending men’s singles champion Andy Murray (from the UK) was unexpectedly eliminated in the quarter finals by Grigor Dimitrov (from Bulgaria) and 17 year old Nick Kyrgios (from Australia) caused an upset when he eliminated Rafael Nadal (from Spain) in the fourth round.

In the end Roger Federer (from Switzerland) and Novak Djokovic (from Serbia) faced each other in the final yesterday. Both players have plenty of Grand Slam experience and that meant that spectators were in for an exciting match. It’s also interesting to note that Djokovic is coached by former Wimbledon champion Borris Becker (from Germany) and that Federer is coached by Stefan Edberg (from Sweden) – huge rivals from the 1980’s and 1990’s. In the end Djokovic won the thrilling match in 5 sets. Djokovic’s second Wimbledon victory allowed him to reach the number 1 spot on the World ATP rankings (for the first time since September 2013).

Rising Czech Republic star Petra Kvitova walked away with her 2nd ladies single Wimbledon title on Saturday. She beat Canadian hopeful Eugenie Bouchard in 2 sets. The match lasted only 55 minutes. Kvitova beat Andrea Hlavackova, Mona Barthel, Venus Williams, Peng Shuai, Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova and Lucie Safarova on her road to the final. Her victory ensured that she moves up to the number 4 spot on the women’s ATP rankings.
