How to Become a Qualified Assessor or Moderator
There is currently a gap in the South African job market when it comes to the availability of qualified assessors and moderators who are able to practice in their fields. Part of the reason for this is due to the fact that many people are simply not aware of how to become qualified in this line of work. Luckily, we’re here to help!
Below, you will find a brief description of what it means to be an assessor or moderator, along with a step-by-step process that you need to follow if you want to become qualified in each of these areas.
Who can qualify to register as an assessor or moderator?
- Tutors, trainers, teachers, and lecturers
- Supervisors
- Managers
- Assigned workplace assessors
- External assessors (external to the learning site)
How to register as a qualified assessor:
Step 1
Ensure that you have a diploma, degree, or relevant occupational qualification in the field for which you would like to be an assessor.
Step 2
Complete a 3-month credit-bearing Assessor course that is verified and certified by the ETDP SETA.
Step 3
Complete the Assessor application form, which you can download here:

(Look for the form under the ‘Quality Assurance’ heading near the bottom of the page)
Step 4
Attach all the relevant documentation (including a copy of your ID, and a copy of your completion certificate for the Assessor course).
Step 5
Submit your application form and supporting documents to the Processing and Quality Assurance Department of the relevant SETA.
Step 6
Sit back and relax. After your application is received, you will be notified in writing whether your application was successful or not. If your application was successful, you will be issued with a registration certificate, registration number, code of conduct, and other relevant documentation and information.
How to register as a qualified moderator:
Step 1
Ensure that you have a diploma, degree, or relevant occupational qualification in the field for which you would like to be a moderator. Also make sure that you have completed and passed the Assessor course.
Step 2
Complete a 3-month credit-bearing Moderator course that is verified and credited by the ETDP SETA.
Step 3
Complete the Moderator application form, which you can download here:

Step 4
Attach all the relevant documentation (including a copy of your ID, and a copy of your completion certificate for the Moderator course).
